The SomnIA Collaborative Research Project (CRP) comprises eight workpackages (see Briefing Paper 1). Brief details of each workpackage is given here, click on the appropriate link for further information, or on the Workpackage Diagram below:

Workpackage 1 aims to:

  • Identify the prevalence of subjectively reported sleep problems within the general population and model their predictors;
  • Examine the extent that older patients consult general practitioners (GPs) about sleep problems;
  • Examine the outcomes (medications prescribed) when patients experiencing sleep difficulties consult their GP

Workpackage 2 aims to:

  • Conduct a survey of the prevalence of poor sleep among people aged 60 and over
  • Obtain an in-depth understanding of older people's meanings and experiences of poor sleep, together with their coping strategies
  • To identify whether aspects of daily living are associated with poor sleep among older people.

Workpackage 3 aims to:

  • Provide an insight into how organisational routines and structures of care homes influence residents' sleep
  • Identify the determinants of poor quality sleep in care homes

Workpackage 4 aims to:

  • Improve sleep quality and reduce daytime fatigue among older people with
    chronic disease;
  • Prevent/delay the need for professionally delivered insomnia interventions.

Workpackage 5 aims to:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of ‘blue-enriched' light therapy in improving sleep quality of older people in their own homes.

Workpackage 6 is:

  • Closely linked to WP5, this workpackage will evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of ‘blue-enriched' light therapy in improving sleep quality of older people in care homes

Workpackage 7 aims to:

  • Develop a series of new support devices to help improve sleep quality of older
    people in thein the community and care homes;
  • Evaluate the cost-effectiveness and acceptability of these new sensor-based
    support devices.
